Australia's most photographed 'big' attraction - the Big Banana.
When you think ‘big’ which country comes to mind? America perhaps with its Big Apple? Well now Tourism Australia want to change all that and are encouraging people to think Big – think Australia!
No we’re not talking about Kevin Rudd’s future plans for Australia or about population control, we talking about the big attractions that make Australia unique!
Tourists and visitors to Australia – as well as Australians themselves – were asked to photograph themselves outside ‘big’ Australian features, such as the Big Merino in Goulburn, NSW, a 15 metre tall concrete Merino sheep. The campaign is all part of the bigger drive by Tourism Australia to get members of the public contributing to their latest tourism initiative.
‘There’s nothing like Australia’ had people from all over the world sharing their own unique experiences of Australia and sending in photos with captions starting “There’s nothing like….” Just under three thousand experiences have so far been uploaded onto the site.
For other famous Australian ‘bigs’, how about the Big Banana north on Coffs Harbour along the Pacific Highway? – probably the most famous ‘big thing’ in Australia? Whilst we’re on the subject of fruit, let’s not forget the Big Pineapple standing at 16 metres high at Woombye in Queensland. How many countries can boast a huge banana, pineapple and a giant sheep as their tourist attractions?
From over-sized animals and fruits to giant termite mounds and boulders, entries have come flooding in and at this month it will be up to the public to pick the best of the bunch. Andrew McEvoy, Tourism Australia’s Managing Director said of the ‘big’ competition; “The ‘bigs’ are such a great example of the Aussie sense of humour and ingenuity.”
To view all of the entries log onto nothinglikeaustralia.com and choose your favourite from May 31st. State finalists will be announced on June 23rd but the overall winner will be decided by members of the voting public. A $25,000 holiday in Australia is up for grabs so make sure you choose wisely.
And above all – think big!
