Ben says he will miss Sunday roasts and the British summer
The 34-year-old charity fundraiser who beat 34,000 applicants to land the “best job in the world” has been labelled a “whingeing pom” after complaining he’ll miss the British summer and Sunday lunches after winning the caretakers job on Hamilton Island.
The six-month $150,000 contract was won by Ben Southall and his first day at work will be on the 1st July.
His duties will include feeding turtles, watching whales, collecting the post and writing a daily blog – all while living in a luxury three-bedroom villa.
Earlier this week Ben told The Sun newspaper he would pine for England’s soggy summer days and Sunday roasts when he starts his job. “I’ll miss the long days we have. The island may boast a tropical climate but it gets dark at 8:00pm.” He continued, “Despite the weather, I love summer in Britain – the festivals and outdoor activities.”
Tourism Queensland spokeswoman Danielle Koopman has defended Mr Southall against accusations of being the wrong man for the job, saying that he was simply asked what he would miss about the UK and answered honestly.
“Ben was asked by a British journalist what he would miss … only to find himself tagged by the British tabloid media as a ‘whinger’,” she said.
“Tourism Queensland has every confidence that Ben is the best person for the best job – he’s adventurous, outgoing and a genuine person who is able to communicate well.”
Mr Southall recenly tweeted on social networking site Twitter that he was sitting on a beach watching the sunset.
“Bring on more of these in Australia. Life is good,” he wrote.
