The Barmy Army show England their support.
The Barmy Army are still going strong and revealed plans to attend this year’s Ashes series in Australia in November.
The Barmy Army started during the 1994-95 Test series in Australia when they came to the media’s attention for their loyal support of the England team even though England lost disastrously to the Australians then.
They are now well-known for their witty chants and songs that have entertained the crowds at away games. Yet their reputation isn’t one for drunkenness and rowdy behaviour, in fact the co-founder, Paul Burnham, maintains that he is proud of the way the Barmy Army behaves.
They are currently organising travel tours to Australia for this year’s Ashes series and interested parties can book directly through the Barmy Army website or they can simply log onto the website and catch up with them wherever they are in Australia.
There will no doubt be the usual set of antics that surround the England Ashes series – in 2003 a huge England flag was unfurled on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. The antics are usually good-humoured and all in good fun. They haven’t escaped some media criticism however, veteran cricket writer and commentator Christopher Martin-Jenkins has shown his disapproval of the Army, accusing them of “demeaning English cricket”.
However you feel about the Barmy Army you cannot escape them and the England Cricket Team certainly benefit from the huge wave of support given them by the fans.
They also predict a England victory in the Ashes this year, with Paul Burnham suggesting that the Ashes will be retained even before the teams get to Sydney. Well we hope that’s the case! You can read more about our exclusive interview with the Barmy Army here – The Barmy Army’s Ashes Predictions.
