The owners of the White Cockatoo call it a day.

The owners of the White Cockatoo call it a day.

Australia’s tourist nudist resort, infamous for its swingers parties and sex romps, is up for sale after the owners decided it was time to hang up their birthday suits.

The White Cockatoo resort in Port Douglas, Queensland became a controversial tourist destination for swingers, nudists and all those wanting a bit more than sun, sand and surf. The controversy wasn’t just limited to the activities it catered for, it also hit the headlines when one tourist refused to undress during a swingers party and what followed escalated into a “mini-riot”.

John Harrison claims that he refused to bare all in front of three women guests and was promptly thrown out by owner Tony Fox for being “disrespectful” to other guests. The police were called and Mr Harrison and his wife were escorted off the premises after threats of violence were made.

But the resort is a popular one and the owners say that despite the economic climate, business for them is booming at least.

Tony and Lenore Fox have owned the resort for the past eight years and say that now is the right time for them to move on and hand the site over to new owners.

The resort doesn’t come cheap however, with a hefty $1.5 million asking price, that’s £866,390.76. For that you get a four-bedroomed house with a swimming pool, licensed bar, large spa and 23 self-contained chalets. It’s government approved and registered and is arguably one of Australia’s largest official nudist resort.

On its website it boasts; “The White Cockatoo continues to thrive with a huge number of return guests, combined with ongoing large numbers of 1st timers, in providing Nudists with the Ultimate Nude Only Tropical Holiday in an exceptionally relaxed and comfortable nude environment with a well sorted method of operation developed to maximise the enjoyment and social interaction of the majority.”

It claims that clothing is optional and indeed from April to October it operates as a family resort.

It has been awarded 3 stars by the AAA tourism board however some customer reviews on the Trip Advisor website offer differing views, complaining of dirty rooms and rude hosts whilst other reviews heap praise upon the owners and the resort.

Whoever decides to buy the resort, one thing’s for certain, they’ll be buying a site that has a very colourful and controversial history. It’ll be interesting to see if the new owners decide to keep its character or follow a straighter, more conventional path in the tourist industry.
