Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has stepped into the unlikely role of childrens author with the publication of his first book written for children.

Mr Rudd collaborated with Rhys Muldoon, a former Play School presenter and actor, to write the book titled Jasper and Abby and the Great Australian Day Kerfuffle – a bit of a mouthful but still, best not to judge a book by its cover.

The story follows the adventures of Mr Rudd’s cat and dog as they get into scrapes in and around Kirribilli House.

The book, which will be out later this month, was described by the Prime Minister’s staff as “more secretive than the budget”, possibly to try and delay his critics who recently panned the PMs 10,000 word essay on the decline of capitalism. We’re assured that this book will make for easier reading.

Mr Rudd is known for his love of animals so the characters should not be of any great surprise, although Mr Rudd insists that it was Rhys Muldoon who first approached him with the idea of writing a book.

“I’ve worked on the text with Rhys and we’ve both interviewed the cat and the dog.” He joked. “They have been very co-operative in their responses but, for most of the time, have gone off the record,” Many journalists would give a wry smile to that remark.

The Australian Prime Minister is following in the footsteps of his daughter Jessica who is currently writing her first novel, although her novel won’t be for children. It is reported that her debut novel will be about a Machiavellian politician and won’t be based on anyone that she happens to know. A completely made-up politician. The character will have no bearing on her father at all, who is absolutely not machiavellian.

We wish both Rudds the best of success with their debut books.
