
The National Gallery Victoria is Australia's oldest museum
Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria is the most visited art gallery in Australia according to the international Art Newspaper annual survey. With 1.48 million visitors in 2007-08, it also ranks among the publication’s top 25 most popular art museums in the world.
The National Gallery of Victoria is the oldest and the largest public art gallery in Australia, holding nowadays 63,000 works of art. Its annual Winter Masterpieces temporary exhibitions attract record visitors, while last year it emerged that it may be of possession of the only portrait of the infamous Lucrezia Borgia in the world.
Melbourne is a city immersed in arts and culture: in addition to the National Gallery of Victoria, the city boasts the largest museum in the southern hemisphere (Museum Victoria), a stunning brand new arts complex (housing the Melbourne Recital Centre and the MTC Theatre), whereas last year it was named by UNESCO its second ever City of Literature.
