Australians Tired of Hung Parliament

The balance of power is still in the hands of the independents.

The balance of power is still in the hands of the independents.

As the three independent MPs who hold the weight of power in their hands celebrate after getting both parties to sign up to Parliamentary reforms, a recent poll shows that the Australian public are tired of the political games.

A recent telephone poll of 1000 voters revealed that 56% of people now want to go back to the polls for another election. They were asked the question of whether they would support a hung parliament or if they would prefer a fresh election. 66% of those in Western Australia supported another election.

After two weeks of ups and downs it appears that the patience of the general public is being tested to their limits. As far as immigration is concerned, emigration forums such as our own community show that potential migrants are confused about what is happening with migration in Australia and are getting increasingly frustrated with the wait for promised changes to the migration policy.

Following the implementation of the Australian Immigration Departments new Skilled Occupations List in July, each state was then meant to implement a new, revised Skilled Migration Plan which is essential for migrants who wish to apply for state sponsorship. However these revisions have been put on hold whilst the government is currently in caretaker mode.

Only the state of Victoria are currently updating potential migrants by announcing each month that their SMP will not be available until the next month at the earliest. They also announced that they would not be taking any more state sponsorship applications until the SMP has been announced.

Meanwhile is the government any closer to deciding who will make Parliament? Labor is currently ahead, gaining 74 of the required 76 house seats, whilst the Coalition has 73. The independents have gained promises from both parties on parliamentary reforms. A victory for them but small comfort for the Australian public who still don’t have a ruling government 2 weeks on from the elections.
