Australians ban booking fees.
Australians are set to benefit from cheap flights with the news that Expedia and Zuji, two leading Australian travel sites, are to drop all booking fees on airline tickets.
The move comes after all major online travel agents for the US dropped booking fees for flights. Whilst this cost the US branch of Expedia $3 million a month, they discovered that the initiative encouraged demand for flights and enabled them to sell higher-margin products and add-ons.
Australians paid more than £11.5 million in online booking fees last year, according to Zuji. This latest move aims to save the passenger between £4.50 to £26 on the price of a ticket.
However, there is a catch, as always! The move by Expedia is temporary, for now. The deal lasts until October 18 and will only be made permanent if the site receives more than one million visits by the deadline. Zuji however, have made their abolition of booking fees permanent on its entire site.
There’s another catch, it’s only available for flights from Australia. Which is great news for those of you lucky enough to live out there and it gives you the perfect excuse to book cheap flights to the UK. Plus you never know, if it catches on they may wipe out booking fees from the UK too.
