Bondi Beach only managed to come third in the survey.
A top survey has discovered ten of Australia’s best beaches favoured by holidaymakers and travellers from Australia.
Surfer’s paradise Bells Beach in Victoria scooped top place as the most popular amongst fellow Aussies scoring a magnificent 44% of votes cast in the Wotif.com survey. Bells Beach is an internationally famous beach and home to the Rip Curl Pro Surf & Music Festival held every Easter. As well as being popular with surfers it’s a gorgeous stretch of sandy beach that is well maintained and looked after by surfers and visitors.
Second in the votes was Queensland’s Whitehaven beach which racked up 18% of the votes. Whitehaven beach has also been awarded as Queensland’s Cleanest Beach in 2008 and just last month was named as the top Eco Friendly Beach in the world by CNN.com. The beach is famous for its smooth, white sands and is a popular tourist attraction.
Surprisingly Australia’s most famous beach, Bondi Beach, on the National Heritage list, only came third in the survey of 3000 Australians. Bondi beach is a one kilometre stretch of glorious sandy beach in New South Wales and was generally considered to be one of the best beaches in the world, but not by fellow Australians it seems. Perhaps its popularity with international and domestic tourists could be attributed to its failing to hit the high score with Aussies.
A spokesperson for Wotif.com admitted that the results were surprising: “It’s interesting to see the beaches most synonymous with Australia, such as Bondi Beach and the Gold Coast, ranked lower in the survey and the surfer’s favourite, Bells Beach, ranked number one among Aussies.”
The survey also discovered that 58% of Australians think that their beaches are the best advertisement for international tourism.
