Rolf Harris will be entertaining the crowds at WOMAD this year.
One of Australia’s biggest exports is appearing at this year’s WOMAD festival in Wiltshire – no, not Fosters lager but the hugely talented and popular Mr Rolf Harris!
Rolf, who was born in Perth, Australia and who emigrated to Britain in the 1950s, will be starring alongside his band at the WOMAD festival in Charlton Park, Malmesbury. He was recently voted the best entertainer ever at Glastonbury and is now touring worldwide.
Rolf Harris is well-known for his musical successes such as ‘Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport’ and ‘Two Little Boys’. He has worked with the likes of George Martin and The Beatles and has played such prestigious venues as the Sydney Opera House. He is also credited with inventing the famous ‘Wobble Board’ but it’s not known if the unique musical instrument will be accompanying him in Wiltshire.
Rolf will be one of the highlights of the musical extravaganza that also boasts another Australian act, the fantastic Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu who will be travelling from Australia to perform.
Geoffrey is an Indigenous musician who sings in his own language of Yolngu. He was born blind but despite his difficulties has learnt to play drums, keyboard, guitar and didgeridoo, however it is his singing voice that will leave you mesmerised. His songs tell stories of his tribe and land and are beautifully poetic and hypnotic to listen to.
Geoffrey now tours with the Saltwater Band and has won awards for Best World Music Album and Best Independent Release along with a host of others. His unique singing talent has led to rave reviews all over the world describing his sound as having “transcendental beauty”. Among his many fans he can count Elton John, Sting and Björk and once you hear his voice you’ll be captured too.
The WOMAD festival is on from the 23 – 25 July 2010 and it’s advised that you buy tickets online for the event which promises to be just as popular as ever before. Well, with two of Australia’s biggest stars in the line-up the event just has to be a winner!
