The new Population Minister will enter the great Australian population debate.
In a move that will undoubtedly add to the uncertainty already experienced by tens of thousands of Australian visa applicants, Kevin Rudd, Prime Minister of Australia has recommended to the Governor General that she appoint the Hon Tony Burke MP to the new Australian office of Minister for Population.
In his new role, the Minister’s first task will be to develop a comprehensive population strategy for Australia in keeping with Prime Minister Rudd’s “big Australia” ideals.
As Minister for Population, Mr Burke will consider the likely trajectory of population growth and the challenges and opportunities this will create.  Australia’s first Population Strategy will consider the social and economic infrastructure Australia will need to support a growing population, including the roads, housing and service delivery network.
It will also consider, as an early priority, the opportunities a growing population will create for economic growth and to further develop and grow Australia’s regional towns and communities. Is is not clear how this role will affect the Australian Immigration Minister Chris Evans or how closely the DIAC will be expected to work with Tony Burke on developing the population strategy.
It’s expected that it will take 12 months to develop the strategy.
Further information about Mr Burke’s appointment and the role of the Minister for Population is available on the Prime Minister’s website.
