Mr Stewards wrong turn saw him end up in Melbourne, 600km away from where he started.
An 81 year old Australian man popped out to the shops to buy a newspaper in Yass, NSW and ended up 600km away in Melbourne, Victoria!
His marathon eight hour drive only ended when, after taking a wrong turn on the highway (although we suspect he made plenty of other wrong turns beforehand) he asked for help from the Victorian state police.
Explaining his actions Mr Eric Steward said: “I just went out on the road to have a drive, a nice peaceful quiet drive. I didn’t know where I was going but I knew it was somewhere, and with a bit of luck I would eventually find my wife again,”
Mr Steward was visiting friends with his wife in the town of Yass, south of Sydney. On Monday morning he thought he would take a drive to buy a newspaper. When he didn’t return after several hours, his worried wife reached him on his mobile telephone and asked him where he was. Mr Steward managed to explain that he didn’t know, but that he could see a sign for the famous Westgate Bridge landmark in Melbourne.
Mr Steward then pulled into a service station and approached Victorian state policeman Clayton Smith to tell him that he was lost. When asked why he hadn’t stopped earlier his response was, “I just like to drive.”
Mr Steward, who has slight dementia, remained unconcerned and puzzled about all the fuss his epic journey had created. “It’s a lot of fuss isn’t it?” He stated.
When asked about getting a satellite navigation system he retorted: “Why would you want one of those? You can’t get lost. There is no fun in that.”
Well Mr Steward’s sense of fun certainly gave him an adventure his family won’t forget in a hurry!
