Australia have started their summer with a victory on UK soil, defeating Bangladesh in their warm up for the Twenty20 World Cup.

Australia raced to a stunning start, scoring 100 runs before losing their first wicket. Bangladesh floundered, finding themselves 2 for 34, managing to only score 181 in their 20 overs.

Andrew Symonds managed to score a useful 27 off 14 balls, and while he has been named for the Twenty20 team, he was controversial left off the Ashes team sheet.

Cricket Australia’s National Selection Panel recently announced their 16-man squad for the five-Test Series and named a number of new faces:

Ricky Ponting (c) - TAS, 34
Michael Clarke (vc) - NSW, 28
Stuart Clark - NSW, 33
Brad Haddin - NSW, 31
Nathan Hauritz - NSW, 27
Ben Hilfenhaus - TAS, 26
Phillip Hughes - NSW, 20
Michael Hussey - WA, 33
Mitchell Johnson - WA, 27
Simon Katich - NSW, 33
Brett Lee - NSW, 32
Graham Manou - SA, 30
Andrew McDonald - VIC, 27
Marcus North - WA, 29
Peter Siddle - VIC, 24
Shane Watson* - QLD, 27

NSP Chairman Andrew Hilditch answered the critics by saying, “The Ashes squad contains an exciting blend of experience and youth. The core of the squad is made up of the side which successfully won the Test series in South Africa and includes Phillip Hughes and Marcus North who scored a hundred on debut.

“The young fast bowling group which performed so well in South Africa of Peter Siddle, Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus will all be taking part in their first Ashes tour to England and as shown in South Africa they have the skills to perform at the international level and will be well suited to English conditions.”

He continued, “Graham Manou has also been rewarded with his first squad selection for an Australian team following very strong interstate performances in all forms of the game over the last few seasons.”

The five-Test Ashes Series will begin on Wednesday 8 July with the first Test in Cardiff.

Ashes Test dates
8 – 12 July First Test at Cardiff
16 – 20 July Second Test at Lord’s
30 July – 3 August Third Test at Edgbaston
7 – 11 August Fourth Test at Headingley
20 – 24 August Fifth Test at The Oval
