Michael Bisping prepares for his fight.

A Clitheroe cage fighter is heading to Australia to fight his ultimate hero in what promises to be a spectacular showdown on Sunday.

Michael Bisping from Clitheroe will be travelling to Australia’s Gold Coast to fight current champion Wanderlei Silva at the Acer Arena in Sydney.

Michael, nicknamed The Count, suffered defeat in July against Dan Henderson and is determined not to repeat that mistake. He said: “This is as big as the fight with Dan Henderson. It is another legend, another world champion, another step up in class to take on a MMA icon. It is as big as it gets.”

Despite Silva being The Count’s hero, he says that when it comes to the fight his loyalties will only extend to himself: “I will have no respect for him at all.”

His opponent is certainly one to beat – if he can. The Brazilian has already won 18 fights out of 20 and his MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) record is a huge 32 wins out of 44. So does the Lancashire lad think he can bring Silva down a peg or two?

“I think I am faster than him, have a bigger variety of strikes and have more weapons than he does. Of course he has that power, which is the thing to worry about, but I have prepared for that.”

Cage fighting is an extreme sport that mixes boxing, wrestling, martial arts and indeed anything – it’s a no-holds-barred contest, often brutal and bloody. The winner is the man that is left standing. Despite its brutality it has 300 million fans worldwide and its reputation is growing. Bisping is a former postman who shot to fame after winning a US reality-TV show called Ultimate Fighter, since then he’s become a household name in America.

It will be the first time that Bisping has travelled to Australia and he feels that now he is in his prime, it’s the right time to go. “I am proud to have been asked to help to grow the sport in Australia.”
