A UN report looking at migration and development has named Australia as coming second for offering the best quality of life in the world.
The UN’s Human Development Report 2009 looked at 182 countries throughout the world and ranked them according to life expectancy, school enrolments and income. Australia was just pipped to the post by Norway, who came out on top.
Britain trailed miserably behind at 21 whilst the US did marginally better at 13. Unsurprisingly Niger obtained the lowest score, with life expectancy there at just over 50 years – 30 years less than a child born in Norway. Niger’s low score was followed closely by Afghanistan.
And as proof that money isn’t everything, Canada came out 4th in the report, 9 places ahead of it’s wealthier rival. This is because Canada ranked higher on their well developed social systems.
Australia could come out on top of the next report as life just gets better and better down under. Life expectancy rose by 3 months compared to a year earlier and income was up by 4%.
Dr Jeni Klugman, author of the report said: “Most migration, internal and international, reap gains in the form of higher incomes, better access to education and health, and improved prospects for their children, which is good news for all the poms in Oz and one of the main reasons so many families are choosing to immigrate to Australia.
However Dr Klugman also warned that whilst migration to Australia yielded such positive results, the toll on indigenous peoples such as the Torres Strait Islanders and Australian Aborigines have been high. Dr Klugman stated that these costs were “large and unacceptable.
