It's now easier to find cheap places to stay in Australia.
Tourists are benefiting from cheap places to stay in Australia as room rates hit an all time low. People booking rooms in Sydney are now paying 30% less for their rooms than at the beginning of the year.
Hotels in Sydney were surveyed using the Hotel Price Index and it showed that the average price for a room fell from £106 to £74. New Zealand too, were offering cheap places to stay as Auckland saw the biggest drop in room prices from an average of £84 to £51 for a room. That’s a 40% decrease.
The Hotel Price Index tracks down room prices actually paid by customers rather than prices that are advertised and they surveyed 78,000 hotels across 13,000 locations around the globe. They found that overall hotel room rates dropped by 17%.
Asia, is also suffering from decreased room rates. They had previously managed to hold up better than the US and Europe but during the first half of this year their hotel room rates dropped by 17%. Further price cuts are also expected.
A spokesman for Hotels.com blamed the price drop on the current economic climate saying: “In the first half of 2009 an ever larger number of hotel rooms chased a dwindling stream of customers,
“As demand fell, hoteliers closed floors and cut back both services and prices, creating a market with a distinctly promotional character that is likely to endure for some time.
Whilst this is bad news for the hotel industry, it is good news for tourists who like a bargain.
