Australia is one of the best places to raise a family.
Australia is one of the best countries in the world to be a mother – that’s according to the annual Save the Children index.
The charity took into consideration things such as education, healthcare and economic opportunities and found that Australia and Norway came out on top whilst Afghanistan and many African nations were considered the worst places to be a mother.
In Afghanistan, women have a one in eight risk of dying whilst pregnant compared to one in 13,300 in Australia. The report also rates the life expectancy of mothers at 84 years with 21 years of schooling on average in Australia.
It’s not the first time Australia has made it to the top of the list for the annual report; since the report first came out in 2000, Australia has made it in the top 10 every year. This time Norway grabbed first place, but as standards in Australia improve, perhaps the 2010 report will see Australia come first?
With more families than ever deciding to make the move to Australia, this report serves to strengthen their convictions that Australia is the best place to raise a family. Many women who have emigrated to Australia with their children cite the outdoor life as one of the many benefits Australia has to offer.
Australians also rate their own childhoods as happy ones, Louise from Queensland has fond memories of growing up in Australia: “Playing outside all year round, holidays at the beach, swimming and sport at school outdoors every day, BBQ on the weekends, playing games with other kids in the street”. Kirsty from South Australia also remembers her idyllic childhood of tree houses, bike riding and cricket in the backyard. It’s the kind of childhood that is generally considered sentimental now, certainly in the UK where the weather keeps children behind closed doors.
