New fires have broken out in the devastated state of Victoria
Following the return of hot, dry conditions in the southeastern state of Victoria, Australia has been warned to brace itself for a second onslaught of bushfires.
This time, Victoria’s capital, Melbourne, doesn’t seem safe from the fires, with a house in the suburb of Belgrave Heights having already been burnt to the ground. Fireman fear more destruction in the coming days.
Hundreds of people have been evacuated after high winds fanned four fires burning across the state, most desperate to keep their families safe, with the horrors of the recent February fires still fresh on their minds.
Most of the town of Warburton, north of Melbourne, has been abandoned as an 80,000 hectare blaze neared the edge of the community, with residents heading for relief centres.
The country fire authority (CFA) said three new fires are threatening the edge of Melbourne, with at least 12 communities also under threat. Residents have been warned to watch for smoke and falling embers
While no one has died in the new fires, three firemen have sustained minor burns and are being treated for their injuries in hospital.
The resurgence of the flames has come after a day of mourning was held for the 210 victims of the February fires, with Princess Anne attending a memorial service. More than 1,800 homes were destroyed by the fires, and 7,000 people are now homeless.
