The two boys caught more than fish that day! (No, this isn't really a picture of them - as if!)
Imagine the scenario, you’re fishing with a pal for the day when you come across a plastic package, inside you discover £53,000. What would you do? Would you keep it or hand it in? Well I’ll be honest with you, I’d probably keep it as would a lot of other people. So you can only feel admiration for the two teenage brothers who, after three weeks of what must have been painful deliberating, decided to hand their incredible find in.
The two boys had been fishing for bass and catfish at Tuntable Creek near Lismore, a picturesque and tropical region of New South Wales, but instead of hooking fish, they reeled in something far better! Hidden nearby in the long grass was a package wrapped up in plastic and inside the astonished boys found $100,000 (£53,000) in wads of $20 and $50.
The boys took the money straight home, but then after fearing where the money might have come from, they decided to tell their mother who sought legal advice.
But their mother admits that deciding to hand the money in, didn’t come easily: “I wrestled with it to be honest, I really wrestled with it. However now that the money has been handed in, the boys are described as ‘relieved’. They were quoted as saying “we were sweet before and we’re sweet now.
Tuntable Creek runs through Nimbin, a town that is known as Australia’s drugs capital. Recent flooding is thought to have washed the package downstream where the boys found it. Speculation is now mounting that it is drugs money.
The family want to remain anonymous for fear that the owner of the money will come looking for it. As the mother explains: “Part of me is not worried because if it is their dirty money well then it deserves to be washed down the creek because they’re stuffing up everyone’s lives and it’s not legit money.
“The other part of me, yes, I am actually in fear that there will be a knock on the door … I don’t want to have any retribution towards my family.
The police are now investigating the matter and have been flooded with calls from not-so-honest citizens claiming that the cash is theirs. If the money is found to be proceeds from a crime, then it will be handed over to government. However if no criminal connection can be proved and no viable claim is made for it, then the family are entitled to keep it.
If any family deserves this bit of good luck, then it’s this one. Their honesty is touching and heart-warming. It’s good to know that such honesty and decency still exists and they deserve to be richly rewarded.
