Tickets go on sale on Wednesday but already the queues are forming of people determined to take advantage of the £10 Pom offer.
Virgin Blue teamed up with Delta Airlines last month to recreate the 1950s offer of the Ten Pound Pom. But rather than the 1.5 million that took advantage of the postwar offer, only 150 lucky hopefuls will be able to snap up the tickets this time round. And so at selected outlets across the country, the queuing has already begun.
One such place is Sta Travel in Belfast on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Five young hopefuls arrived and began to unpack their camping equipment in preparation for the 96 hour wait. There are only 10 tickets on sale from this shop, so the five were taking no chances.
One of them is product design graduate Colleen McCallion who graduated from Napier University but has since started work as a waitress. She’s here with her boyfriend Jack Coe from Scotland. They both hope to find work in Oz.
Another, Joe Slevin, works in Cafe Renoir, just across the street from Spa Travel. He’ll also be seeking work in Oz. “I just want to live the lifestyle I have here, but in the sunshine.” He says. Well, looking at the rain-soaked streets, who can blame him?
All of them already have their working visas for Australia, a prerequisite for the tickets. All are hoping for a better life in the sunshine, just like the ones who went 50/60 years previously.
The atmosphere amongst the youngsters is jovial and good-natured, with each of them minding each other’s places whilst they nip off for showers and refreshments. Let’s hope it remains so, after all they’ve a long wait ahead of them and the weather is far from kind at the moment. I do hope they realise that it’s winter in Australia right now!
Do you know anyone who took advantage of the original Ten Pound Pom deal? If so we’d love to hear their stories!
